Voting for key leadership positions of the Democratic Party (DP) has started in the ongoing party’s ongoing National Delegates Conference in Mbarara.

The conference, which kicked off yesterday May 31, was officially opened by National Chairman Dr. Kiwanuka Mayambala, who outlined the procedural guidelines for the event attended by presidential contenders, party representatives, and delegates.

The morning session featured a stirring address by President General and Minister Hon. Nobert Mao. Reflecting on his decades-long service, Mao reaffirmed his dedication to DP’s ideals and praised key allies, notably Vice President Hon. Dr. Fred Mukasa Mbidde.

Accompanied by their spouses, Mrs. Beatrice Mao (“Untie B”) and Mrs. Phiona Mbidde, the leaders took their places at a designated table, underscoring the party’s unity.

Hon. Dr. Gerald Siranda, the party’s Secretary General, presented the Election Management Committee’s report, chaired by Mr. Kennedy Mutenyo.

The report confirmed the vetted candidates for various positions, including the competitive race for party president.

Notable contenders include Hon. Nobert Mao, Dr. Michael Lulume Bayigga, and Mr. Alitia. However, Hon. Sebamala Richard was disqualified for not meeting the constitutional requirement of ten years of active party membership.

Several positions, such as Vice President and Deputy Secretary General, were declared uncontested, with incumbents like Christine Mugerwa and Hon. Dr. Fred Mukasa Mbidde affirmed for re-election.

The conference also approved a mini National Executive Committee (NEC) to oversee the election report’s transmission to the full Delegates Conference.

Mr. Kennedy Mutenyo was elected chairperson of elections, in line with Article 65 of the party’s amended constitution.

The day concluded with Dr. Mayambala announcing the dissolution of Mao’s cabinet, transferring authority to the elections chairperson.

Proceedings adjourned today Sunday June 1 at 5 a.m., with voting scheduled to resume today at 8 a.m. Indeed, by press time, the voting was ongoing with no serious problems reported.
