In a bid to boost performance in the Primary Leaving Examination (PLE), more than 100 classroom teachers and school administrators from West Nile have been trained on interpreting the new primary school curriculum and applying effective teaching methods aligned with the national exams structure.
The training, organized by West Nile Rural Electrification Company (WENRECo), targeted teachers and administrators from 15 schools across Koboko, Terego, Arua, Zombo, and Maracha districts. Each district presented three schools for the program, which aims to address challenges caused by the revised curriculum and the new competency-based education exam structure.
Education stakeholders noted that many schools in the region still struggle to interpret the new curriculum, which has resulted in poor exam performance. Richard Okello, a facilitator at the training, said substandard teaching methods and off-topic instruction remain major causes of underperformance.Patrick Adaku, Director of Studies at Yivu Primary School, acknowledged that many schools require external interventions to improve performance.
He said initiatives like teacher capacity-building significantly contribute to better learning outcomes.WENRECo began the education initiative in 2024 by supporting three schools with regular assessments and teacher training. The program has since expanded to additional districts, with schools selected in consultation with District Education Officers.
Eng. Kenneth Kigumba, General Manager of WENRECo, emphasized that more strategies are needed to address the educational challenges affecting West Nile, highlighting teacher and administrator training on the new curriculum as a priority.Maxine Dramadri, Arua District Senior Schools Inspector, called for continued engagement on the new curriculum and other factors influencing learner performance, based on prior research conducted by education stakeholders.
The 15 selected schools will also participate in joint regular assessments managed by West Nile Education Solution, preparing candidate classes for the final national examination. URN
