A 111-year-old widow, Florence Nantumbwe, a resident of Wanjeyo Village in Kimenyedde Sub County, Mukono District, is embroiled in a land dispute with Emmanuel Mubiru, who claims ownership of 6.5 acres allegedly bought from her son, Solomon Mbogo.
Nantumbwe says the land in question originally belonged to her late husband, Jonathan Bwogere, and that her son sold it without her knowledge or consent. She insists she will not vacate the land without receiving her rightful share as a widow.
“My husband left me on this land, and even my two sons abandoned me without any support. It has been years without seeing them. I have worked hard to sustain myself, and I want my share,” said Nantumbwe. The centenarian narrates that her home has come under attack twice, with unknown assailants vandalizing her property and destroying her crops.
“Last night, some people came at midnight and threatened me together with my grandchildren. They burned household items including beddings and clothes, and destroyed our crops. They warned that I would die if I refused to leave this land,” she recounted tearfully.
Nantumbwe expressed disappointment in Nagalama Police, accusing them of failing to act on her reports despite repeated complaints. “I have been reporting these attacks to police, but nothing has been done. I now fear for my life,” she lamented.
The LC1 Chairperson of Wanjeyo Village, George William Sembatya, condemned the attack and questioned Mubiru’s alleged purchase of the land. “As chairman, I have no record of Mubiru as a landowner. The family of the late Jonathan Bwogere has never introduced him to my office as a land purchaser,” Sembatya said.
He added that he has summoned Mubiru several times to explain the matter, but he has refused to appear before local authorities and continues to harass the widow. Nantumbwe’s grandson, Lubowa Yoson, accused Mubiru of orchestrating the attacks, saying his sons have been threatening them to vacate the land.
“We have nothing left. The attack destroyed all our property and food. We don’t even have what to eat,” Yoson said, appealing to well-wishers for assistance. Residents of Wanjeyo Village, together with their local leaders, have called on police and relevant authorities to intervene and ensure justice for the elderly widow. They demanded the arrest of the suspects behind the attacks and protection for Nantumbwe’s life and property.
