Overview:
According to the organizers, Buganda Kingdom is partnering not only with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kasana–Luweero but also with the Uganda Red Cross Society to ensure comprehensive service delivery.
Men in Buganda’s Bulemeezi County have been encouraged to take advantage of free prostate cancer screening services that will be offered during an upcoming Buganda Kingdom mega medical camp later this month.
Prostate cancer is a disease that develops in the prostate gland, a small gland found only in males. The prostate lies below the bladder and in front of the rectum and produces fluid that forms part of semen.
The disease occurs when cells in the prostate begin to grow abnormally and uncontrollably. Some forms of prostate cancer grow slowly, while others are more aggressive.
Medical experts emphasize that prostate cancer is not contagious and cannot be transmitted from one person to another through contact, sexual activity, sharing utensils, or blood.
However, if left untreated, it can spread to other parts of the body, a process known as metastasis, often affecting bones and other vital organs.
The call to men in Bulemeezi County has been sounded by the Buganda Kingdom, which is organizing a two-day medical camp scheduled for February 24 and 25, 2026.
The camp will be held at Kasana St. Jude Primary School, located at the headquarters of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kasana–Luweero.
The Kingdom organizes such medical camps annually on a rotational basis across its 18 counties. This year’s edition has been allocated to Bulemeezi County, which covers the civic districts of Luwero, Nakaseke, and part of Nakasongola.
During an organizing meeting held on Thursday at Pope John Paul II Pastoral Centre (PJP II PC), it was revealed that the Buganda Kingdom is partnering with the Kasana–Luweero Diocese to deliver the health services.
Addressing the meeting, the Kkangaawo (County Chief) of Bulemeezi, Ronald Mulondo, welcomed the initiative and urged residents to take their health seriously.
He noted that the camp presents a rare opportunity for residents to undergo free medical check-ups and encouraged men in particular not to ignore prostate screening.
Edward Kaggwa Ndagala, Chief Executive Officer of the Kabaka Foundation, the body behind the medical camp which is under the Kingdom’s Health Program, also urged men in Luwero to turn up in large numbers.
He emphasized the importance of regular prostate screening, advising that men aged 40 and above should undergo annual check-ups. Kaggwa questioned why men would miss such a vital and free health service, yet treatment for advanced prostate cancer can be extremely costly.
He further appealed to the Kkangaawo to treat the mobilization as a Kingdom directive so that more men would participate in the two-day camp.
Msgr. Vincent De Paul Mukiibi, the Vicar General of Kasana–Luweero Diocese, also welcomed the initiative, noting that many people often assume they are healthy simply because they do not feel sick.
He stressed that early detection is key, adding that when Bishop Lawrence Mukasa was informed about the medical camp, he warmly welcomed the initiative as a blessing to the people of Bulemeezi.
According to the organizers, Buganda Kingdom is partnering not only with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kasana–Luweero but also with the Uganda Red Cross Society to ensure comprehensive service delivery.
Specialists in various medical fields will be deployed to attend to residents during the two-day camp.
