Through a letter on her official Twitter account addressed to the Chairperson National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission Dr Tanga Odoi, Dr Jane Ruth Aceng has officially withdrawn from the Speakership race.

Aceng says, “I’ve taken a decision to withdraw my intention to stand for the position of Speaker of Parliament .I have not had enough time to consult my party leadership ,colleagues and family.I pledge to continue serving deligently ,colleagues and family.”

Aceng, who is the Minister of Health and also Member of Parliament for Lira City was one of the 13 NRM MPs who expressed their interest for the position of Speaker yesterday.

Uganda’s health minister who shot up the stairs of national-wide fame over ‘proper handling’ of the Covid-19 pandemic soon after it had been confirmed in the country, Jane Ruth Aceng, made it clear through her Personal Assistant, George William Ssebamala, that she wanted to be the executive head of the legislature.

The race now remains with 15 MPs where 12 are from NRM who include; Among Anita ,Sarah Opendi,Jacob Oboth Oboth ,Wakabi Pius ,Okot John Amos ,Asiimwe Florence Akiiki,Obua Denis Hamson ,Kintu Alex Brandon ,Ssekikubo Theodore, Felix Okot Ogong,Atima Jackson , Kafuuzi Jackson and three from the Opposition who include: Shammim Malende , Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda and Asuman Basalirwa.
