The Police in Adjumani District have launched a manhunt for one of their own who is accused of shooting dead a 24-year-old male suspect.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Moses Acaye, the Officer in Charge of Alebtong Police Station in Lango reportedly shot and killed Simon Omona using a pistol on Tuesday afternoon. The incident took place at Apaa Market in Apaa Township in Itirikwa Sub-county, Adjumani district.

Acaye reported his presence to Apaa Police Station on Tuesday claiming that he was following up the death of his brother, Emmanuel Opio. Opio was killed by a mob on Tuesday 10th February after being suspected of stealing.

Before shooting Emmanuel Opio, Acaye reportedly went back to Apaa Police Station and reported that he had identified suspects in his brother’s death within Apaa Trading Center.

Charles Okoya, the Local Council One Chairperson of Apaa told Uganda Radio Network on Wednesday that Acaye later found Omona with whom he had a confrontation. Acaye reportedly drew his pistol and shot at Omona. Omona died shortly after being rushed for medical treatment at a clinic in Apaa Trading Center while Acaye vanished from the scene.

Okoya said there is a need for the police to expedite the investigation and the arrest of the suspect on the run so that he faces the law.

Ignatius Dragudu, the Police Public Relations Officer for the North West Nile region condemned the incident and faulted Acaye for unprofessional conduct despite being a senior police officer.

Dragudu said the Police are already tracing the suspect’s whereabouts adding that once apprehended, he will account for his misdeeds.

Peter Taban Data, the Adjumani Resident District Commissioner noted that an investigation into the murder has commenced.
