Bugiri Municipality Member of Parliament Asuman Basalirwa has said he is ready to take on the mantle of Speakership when the shadow cabinet endorses him.

Basalirwa now joins the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party’s Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda who has also expressed that he will run for the position of Speaker of Parliament.

Ssemujju was a competitor in the previous elections that brought the late Oulanyah to the position of the speaker, and his candidature caused a stir in the opposition bloc.

Speaking about the matter, Ssemujju said he is happy the same situation will “happen again shortly’.

“The last time I competed for a speakership position, it was a very bruising time that the parliament wouldn’t want to go through that again. The good thing about this is that it will happen in a short time,” he said.

Among other members of the opposition who have expressed interest in the position include Gulu West MP Martin Ojara Mapenduzi who according to sources would like to contest for Deputy Speaker.
