Rt. Rev. Lawrence Mukasa, the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Kasana-Luwero, has urged men within his jurisdiction—spanning the districts of Luwero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola—to actively oppose same-sex marriages.
He encouraged men to voice their opposition to the acceptance and legalization of such unions, emphasizing that they contradict divine intention. In his message, Bishop Mukasa affirmed that God designed marriage as a sacred bond between a man and a woman, intended for procreation and the flourishing of humanity.
This message was delivered during a special Mass for the pilgrimage of the Diocesan Men’s Guild by Rev. Fr. Denis Ssebuggwaawo, the Kasana-Luwero Diocesan Pastoral Coordinator. Bishop Mukasa further called for repentance among men who support homosexuality and lesbianism, stating that they are undermining the natural order established by God.
He underscored the Catholic Church’s teaching that marriage is a sacramental union between one man and one woman, meant for mutual support and the creation of life. According to Bishop Mukasa, same-sex marriages fall short of this sacred understanding and fail to align with the divinely instituted purpose of human relationships.
The bishop also asserted that same-sex relationships do not reflect the natural purpose of sexuality, which he believes is rooted in the complementarity of male and female.
In alignment with Bishop Mukasa’s call, President Yoweri Museveni signed the Anti-Homosexuality Bill into law in May 2023, after significant amendments were made by Parliament. This legislation remains one of the world’s strictest anti-LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender) laws.
While homosexual acts were already illegal in Uganda, the new law imposes life imprisonment for those convicted. Additionally, it mandates the death penalty in so-called aggravated cases, which include engaging in homosexual acts with individuals under 18 or when one party is infected with a lifelong illness, such as HIV.
Regarding the pilgrimage, the Men’s Guild’s special pilgrimage to Kasana-Luwero Diocese is one of the activities planned for the Holy Year 2025, as announced by Pope Francis. Bishop Mukasa directed on December 29, 2024, during the launch of the Holy Year in his diocese, that special groups would embark on pilgrimages throughout the year, with the Men’s Guild being the first to participate.
Dr. Ronald Kibira, chairman of the Kasana-Luwero Diocesan Men’s Guild, generously donated cement worth over six million shillings (UGX 6M) to the bishop to support his ongoing campaign to establish new parishes.
