Butaleja District now has a permanent office for the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP), aimed at improving access to justice and extending free legal services to the public. The office was officially commissioned on Saturday at the district headquarters, with Harriet Angom, Chief State Attorney for Tororo Region — covering Busia, Tororo, and Butaleja districts — as the chief guest.

Angom explained that the land for the office had been secured in 2014, but until now, the DPP operated from rented premises that posed challenges such as noise pollution and limited privacy. She thanked the government for providing funding to construct the new facility.

“The government, by constructing a permanent building with offices, intends to bring legal services closer to the people,” Angom said. She emphasized that the office will handle all criminal cases, except treason, which falls under the court-martial.

Moses Sekamatte Nsereko, contractor for the project, said the offices were built by Principal Engineering Company Ltd at UGX 450 million. He added that a similar office in Amuria District was completed at UGX 460 million and handed over last Wednesday.

Residents welcomed the development. Sam Weere and Agatha Mutoni from Butaleja Town Council said that a permanent DPP office will significantly improve the delivery of legal services and ensure quicker access to justice for the people of the district.
