Ugandan middle-distance runner Janat Chemusto on Saturday won the1,500 meters at the 2023 Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi, Kenya.

The 2014 Commonwealth Youth bronze Medalist in 3,000 meters completed the race in 4:01.79 seconds to defeat Kenya’s Nelly Chepchirchir, who crossed the finishing line in 4:04.56 seconds while Hawi Abera Kumsa from Ethiopia came third in the time of 4:06.16.

Chemusto’s Personal Best performance also earned her a ticket to the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

“I am supper excited that besides my PB, I will also represent my country Uganda in the world Championships” says Chemusto.

Chemusto’s achievement is significant for her as it is the first time to compete in the World Championships which has world class athletes.

Njia Benjamin, the vice President of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), stated that Chemusto’s victory is a sign of a prestigious season performance among the female athletes who have booked the appearance at the Budapest event.

“So far, three female athletes have already hit the qualification marks, for example Stella Chesang and Mercyline Chelangat who recently achieved in the 42km race” he said.
