The Director of the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), Tom Magambo, has dismissed as false and misleading claims circulating online alleging his involvement in the ongoing family dispute between Kampala University Founder and Chancellor, Prof.Badru Kateregga and his wife, Jolly Shubaiha Kateregga.
The couple, has for the bigger part of this and last year had marital wrangles with each party trading serious allegations against the other.
Prof. Kateregga claims that his wife had repeatedly subjected him to physical abuse, and also forcefully evicted him from his own house in Buziga, Kampala.
Despite his wife’s consistent denial of these accusations, Prof. Kateregga insists that he endured prolonged mistreatment at her hands.
Now, speaking to this authoritative news website, AIGP Magambo said his team brought to his attention messages seeking to drag his name into the domestic wrangles of the couple, an allegation he strongly rejected.
He clarified that the matter was already addressed publicly by the Uganda Police Force through its Public Relations Office (PRO) in July, with clear guidance that the dispute is a civil matter.
“As CID, we have no powers to intervene in this matter,” Magambo said, reiterating that police can only act within the confines of the law and on the basis of criminal jurisdiction.
He further stressed that he has never met Prof. Kateregga or Mrs. Kateregga personally, dismissing suggestions that they are known to each other as the work of “diversionary forces.”
According to Magambo, such insinuations should be rejected “with the contempt they deserve.”
The clarification aligns with the earlier police press release which explained that the dispute, initially reported in November 2024, was investigated and forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).
The ODPP subsequently advised that the matter relates to property ownership and management and is best handled by a civil court, beyond the mandate of police and CID.
Magambo urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation and instead focus on constructive national development. “Let us focus on building our motherland, Uganda,” he said.
Police have consistently advised all parties involved in the Kateregga family dispute to pursue lawful civil avenues for resolution, emphasizing that any change in property possession can only be effected through a court order.
