The Director of the Criminal Investigations Directorate, Tom Magambo, is mourning the death of his son, Timothy Magambo, who drowned in the United States over the weekend.

Timothy Magambo, 18, a freshman student at the University at Albany, died on Saturday, May 16, after a swimming incident near Shelter Island off Long Island, New York.According to police reports, Timothy was part of a group of seven friends who attempted to swim from Wades Beach to Shell Beach across a channel.

During the swim, he became separated from the group and is believed to have turned back toward Wades Beach alone. His friends later realized he was missing and alerted authorities before launching a search. Timothy was eventually found floating face down several hundred yards from where he had last been seen.

Bystanders pulled him from the water and attempted emergency life-saving measures before calling 911. He was later pronounced dead at South Shore University Hospital from injuries consistent with drowning.

Timothy had recently graduated from Pelham Memorial High School in 2025, where he played lacrosse, and had just completed his freshman year studying business at the University at Albany.

His mother, Caroline Nalwanga Magambo, who works in New York, paid an emotional tribute to her son in a Facebook post following the tragedy.“Our world has turned to darkness. Our sweet Timothy Magambo has been snatched from us,” she wrote.

“I can’t explain the pain I feel right now. Our sunshine is gone. I did not expect the sunset after only 18 years. You are the kindest and most gentle soul I know.”She described Timothy as a loving and selfless young man who always cared deeply for those around him.“Many times you put the happiness of others above your own.

As a mother I taught you kindness but I don’t think I prepared you enough for a world that is sometimes unkind,” she added.“Rest with the Angels my son. I will cry and remember you all the days of my life.

I will remember your sweet smile and jokes. You will never stop being my special gift both in life and death.”Authorities in the United States say no foul play is suspected and investigations indicate the incident was a tragic accident. URN
