Muslim leaders from Eastern Uganda have rallied support for Mufti Shaban Ramathan Mubaje and disregarded the appointment of Sheikh Abdallah Semambo as their acting leader.

The leaders who were drawn from across the districts of Bugisu, Bukedi, Teso, and Sebei resolved during a meeting held at Nkoma Secondary School in Mbale on Thursday. They included District Kadhis, District Chairpersons and their executives and members of the National Assembly of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council.

Led by Sheikh Ahmed Wandega, the group observed that the appointed interim leader was unlawfully chosen and did not follow provisions of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council constitution. He announced that as Eastern Region they will still pay allegiance to the leadership of Sheikh Mubaje until the general election of a Mufti is announced through the proper protocols.

Sheikh Ibrahim Asante, the Tororo District Kadhi emphasized that they have rallied their support behind Sheikh Mubaje as the rightly recognized Mufti of Uganda and cautioned that the law will be used to deal with all those masquerading as leaders of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council.

Sheikh Mubaje was recently sued by the Uganda Muslim Lawyers Association over the alleged fraudulent sale of Muslim property. Mubaje was sued alongside businessman Justus Kyabahwa.

The association argues that the sale of the two square miles of land in Sembabule district to Kyabahwa; a transaction that has since gone wrong and threatens the auctioning of other Muslim properties including the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) headquarters at Old Kampala was contracted corruptly from the very start.
