The programme supports 18 categories registered as Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisations (SACCOs), including veterans, carpenters, journalists, fishermen, tailors, caterers, boda boda riders, mechanics, restaurant owners, women entrepreneurs, and elected leaders.
Other categories include youth leaders, produce dealers, performing artists, salon operators, taxi operators, persons with disabilities, welders, and market vendors. Martin Isabirye, the manager of the Microfinance Support Centre (MSC) in charge of Busoga sub-region, said during a regional meeting held in Mayuge Town that 576 SACCOs were launched in August 2018 across the region.
A total of UGX 17.920 billion was disbursed, with each constituency receiving UGX 560 million. However, he noted that recovery rates remain below expectations.
Isabirye said they have realised that some SACCO members are not actively implementing the projects for which they received funds. He added that the centre has intensified sensitisation efforts to promote a strong saving culture and encourage members to refund the money to ensure the sustainability of the organisation and allow others to benefit.
Ronald Kawoma, the chairperson of the Busoga sub-region Emyooga missionary group, said they have started moving to different districts to sensitise SACCO members on proper operationalisation and to remind them that the funds are revolving in nature.
Amos Balidawa, the treasurer of the Busoga sub-region Emyooga missionary group, said serious groups have benefited and established viable projects using the funds.
Moses Owori, the secretary of Bunya Youth Leaders Emyooga SACCO, said their group has initiated several projects from the funds received. He explained that delays in refunding the money are due to long-term projects they invested in.
