Security has been beefed up at the Patidar Samaj Sports Ground in Lugogo Kampala where the Forum for Democratic Change-FDC is scheduled to hold its delegates conference today.
Security personnel from the field force unit of police have been deployed to ensure security in at the venue.
The party has also deployed it’s security committee members to ensure that only delegates and other accredited personnel access the venue. Only accredited people with FDC tags are granted access after being subjected to body and property check.
There are 1271 delegates expected to attend the conference. The categories of voters invited are; District Chairpersons, General secretaries, Secretaries for Publicity and Mobilization, Women league Chairpersons and Youth Secretaries while at the constituency level Chairpersons and General Secretaries of whom one must be a female were invited.
The FDC Electoral Commission chairman Boniface Bamwenda Toterebuka says they are set to the delegates conference which shall elect a new National Executive Committee-NEC of the party.
Toterebuka says that contestants shall be given an opportunity to campaign before the delegates before the votes are cast. He says that winners shall be announced today and sworn in. He made it clear that those against the elections want to cause a constitutional crisis in the party being that the term of the current NEC ends tonight as the day ends.
As the Delegates Conference goes on, a section of FDC members are against the elections. This group based at Katonga went to court seeking to block the delegates conference but court, in a judgement issued by Justice Musa Ssekaana on Thursday evening dismissed their application on grounds that it was filed late, and that the applicants sued Bamwenda Toterebuka not the FDC and hence the party can’t suffer consequences of an individual.
The Katonga group led by Erias Lukwago as the interim Party President issued an election roadmap with a delegates conference scheduled for 2024.
