A fisherman has drowned in Lake Kyoga while evading arrest from the Fisheries Protection Unit of Uganda People’s Defense Force.

The deceased has been identified as Afani Wajokirana aged 38 years a fisherman at Ninga landing site located in Kalungi sub-county, Nakasongola district.

Rogers Bisaaso Mugerwa the LCI Chairperson of Ninga village narrates that Wajokirana and two other fishermen were on Thursday surrounded on the Lake by the Fisheries Protection Unit over reports that they were engaging in illegal fishing.

Bisaaso adds that the scuffle ensued before the fishermen jumped into the Lake to evade arrest.   He says that Wajokirana drowned after he failed to swim to the shorelines while the two survived.

Bisaaso says that they has registered about five cases of drowning at the landing site as fishermen attempted to evade arrest since 2021 to date.

Sam Twineamazima the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson confirmed the death of a fisherman and said that Policemen retrieved the body from the Lake on Thursday evening.  Twineamazima added that the postmortem was conducted and the body was handed over to the bereaved family for burial.

Twineamazima said that two fishermen who were with the deceased have since been arrested to help in investigations into the incident.

Several fishermen condemned the FPU team for brutality during the operations and for accepting bribes from selected fishermen to let them conduct illegal fishing while arresting others.

The fishermen appealed to Area members of Parliament to ask President Yoweri Museveni to investigate the brutal activities of the FPU team on Lake Kyoga.

Noah Mutebi Wanzala the Nakasongola County Member of Parliament condemned the alleged selective operations against illegal fishing and brutality targeting fishermen.

Mutebi promised to invite the Fisheries Minister, the FPU team, and the District Security Committee to a meeting to discuss how to manage the Lake without causing the death of the fishermen.

The deceased fisherman will be buried in Mayuge district on Friday.
