Five suspected members of a machete-wielding gang have been apprehended in a security operation in the Kyebando-Kyamuka zone, Nansana Municipality in Wakiso district. The operation was prompted by a public outcry over a gang that had been ambushing people, particularly during late evening hours.   Nansana police have identified the suspects as Dennis Lumbuye, 21; Mudasir Kitandwe, 19; Imran Muganzi, 19; Hussein Abubakar, 33; and Trisia Nanono, 22. The suspects are locked up at Nansana police station.

Lumbuye hails from Kabulengwa village, Kitandwe is a mechanic residing in Masitoowa, Nansana, and Muganzi is a resident of Wakiso A West zone. Notably, Hussein was found with an identity card indicating that he is a medical worker deployed at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) Health Centre Three, while Nanono possessed an identity card from Kisubi University.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, disclosed that the suspects were found in possession of sharp machetes and khat alias Mairungi, which have been seized as exhibits. Owoyesigyire further mentioned that the police are currently reviewing all recent robbery complaints in Nansana and Wakiso to determine whether this group was involved in these incidents.

“We got them with two sharp pangas and narcotic drugs. We are interested in establishing whether these suspects have been behind the robbery and theft complaints that have been registered in Wakiso areas,” Owoyesigyire said. Nanono claimed that she had only visited the group and denied any involvement in the alleged crimes.

Similarly, Hussein insisted that being a medical worker, he had no connection to robbery activities. Nonetheless, the police have urged individuals who have evidence of being attacked by this group to come forward, facilitating the collection of concrete evidence for successful prosecution. Nansana has recently been plagued by incidents involving machete-wielding gangs.”
