Manchester United footballer Mason Greenwood has been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault following allegations on social media and that led to the club announcing an indefinite suspension of the forward.

Greater Manchester Police said it was made aware of “social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence”.

It added “we can confirm a man in his 20s has since been arrested on suspicion of rape and assault”.

He remains in custody for questioning and inquiries are ongoing.

Greenwood’s girlfriend, Harriet Robson took to social media accusing the England international of physical violence.

She shared a voice recording, photos of her bloodied nose and bruised body accusing him of forcing himself on her. Along with the video, she wrote, “To everyone who wants to know what Mason Greenwood actually does to me.”

The outcome was an earlier statement by Manchester United saying, “We are aware of images and allegations circulating on social media.

“We will not make any further comment until the facts have been established.

“Manchester United does not condone violence of any kind.”

As a demonstration of their strong opposition to violence, the club released another statement saying the player will no longer train with the club as well as not feature in matches until further notice.

It reads, “Mason Greenwood will not return to training or play matches until further notice.”

Mason Greenwood has not responded to the social media allegations.

The 20-year-old footballer, who made his debut for the club in March 2019, signed a four-year deal in February 2021 after rising up through the ranks of the United academy.
