The Directorate of Crime Intelligence (DCI) has arrested four notorious vehicle robbers in operations carried out in four districts. Last month, DCI assigned a team of seven personnel to trace the vehicle robbers.
Security leads cited Juma Kisule as the ringleader of the gang based in Kampala metropolitan areas majorly in Katwe, Ndeeba, Makindye and Najjanankumbi. The clandestine operation led to Kisule’s arrest and upon interrogation, he revealed his accomplices as Godfrey Kavuma, Henry Kakuru Sekindu and Sepriano Mulinda.
“During interrogation, Kisule admitted being part of the racket that steals and sells motor vehicles and revealed his accomplices as Kavuma, Kakuru and Mulinda. He told us they are based in Wobulenzi in Luwero District,” reads the detectives’ report.
The team tracked Kavuma and Sekindu who have since reportedly confessed to the offences of stealing and selling motor vehicles. The duo revealed the people and places where they sell robbed vehicles. Kavuma led the team to Nakasongola and Masaka Districts where several motor vehicles were recovered from the people who had bought them.
So far, 10 vehicles have been recovered in security operations in Kampala, Masaka, Luweero and Nakasongola. The recovered vehicles include UAR 054S Ipsum Silver in colour, UAN 397 U Ipsum pearl white, UBA 306F Noah pearl blue recovered from Kavuma Muhammad in Nakasongola, UAP 295T Noah white in colour recovered from Kasubi in a parking yard and UAS 293V recovered from Lukwago Amisi in Nyendo – Masaka.
Other vehicles that had been robbed and sold include UAY 073X Sienta white in colour recovered from Kisule Musa in Nyendo – Masaka, UAH 131L Corona white in colour recovered from Kayiwa in Nyendo – Masaka, UAV 360B – Premio white in colour, UAP 898U Ipsum and UAQ 508D – Rav4.
The Police’s Director for Political Commissariat, Hadijah Namutebi, said the recovered vehicles have since been transported to Flying Squad offices at the former Special Investigations Unit (SIU) in Kireka, Nakawa Division, in Kampala.
“All the above motor vehicles were stolen by the gang and sold out to unsuspecting customers. More recoveries and arrests are ongoing. The suspects will appear in court on charges of stealing Motor Vehicles,” Namutebi said.
Namutebi, and Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, have cautioned Ugandans to be very careful in regards to protecting their property and cash in these last days of the year as criminality tends to spike.
