The ongoing reconstruction of the Luwero-Kiwoko road has been identified as the cause of the freshwater shortage affecting several parts of Luwero Town Council in Luwero District. Residents connected to the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) system have been experiencing a fifth consecutive day without running water, particularly in Kiwogozi Zone.
The issue was verified by Daniel Mugoya, Manager of NWSC’s Luwero branch, in an interview with Uganda Radio Network (URN). Mugoya explained that the water shortage stemmed from ongoing road construction on the Kiwoko line, leading to disruptions in the water supply system. NWSC is reportedly working diligently to address the situation.
Despite attempts to reach Allan Ssempebwa, the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) spokesperson, for comment, there has been no response as of the time of reporting. Residents affected by the water shortage expressed frustration, with some accusing NWSC of unfair treatment. However, NWSC refuted these claims, attributing the water shortage to issues with a borehole crucial for serving the town.
This recent water crisis adds to a series of past incidents affecting the water supply in Luwero Town Council. In December 2023, consumers experienced over seven days without water, leading to increased water costs. Earlier incidents in September 2023 and October 2021 were attributed to intermittent power supply and weather-related damage to infrastructure, respectively.
The current situation highlights the challenges faced by residents in accessing reliable water services, especially in areas undergoing infrastructure development and facing recurring issues with water supply systems.
