Veteran Ugandan politician and retired army general Gen. Moses Ali is reportedly in critical condition, according to multiple family sources.
Gen. Ali, the Member of Parliament for Adjumani West County in the 12th Parliament, is said to be receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a leading hospital in Kampala.
A family member, who requested anonymity because they are not authorised to speak publicly on the matter, told this publication that the 87-year-old’s condition is extremely critical.
“He is very sick and currently in the ICU. At this point, there is very little hope,” the source said.
Another family source, who also confirmed his hospitalisation, said Gen. Ali is in a deep coma and that his medical condition is too unstable to allow evacuation abroad for specialised treatment.
Despite repeated attempts to obtain an official update, government officials at both Parliament and State House had not commented on Gen. Ali’s condition by the time of publication.
Gen. Moses Ali was among the first legislators sworn into Uganda’s 12th Parliament in May this year.
Owing to his frail health, he took his Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Member of Parliament in a subdued ceremony away from the main public swearing-in venue, unlike most newly elected MPs.
Born on April 5, 1939, in Adjumani District, Gen. Ali is one of Uganda’s longest-serving public figures. Until the end of the 11th Parliament, he served as Second Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader of Government Business from 2021 to 2026.
His political and military journey spans several chapters of Uganda’s post-independence history.
After studying law at Makerere University and undertaking military training in Israel and the United Kingdom, he joined the government of former President Idi Amin, serving as Minister of Finance before later becoming Minister of Internal Affairs.
Following the fall of the Amin government in 1979, Ali went into exile and later led the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF), an armed rebel movement operating in the West Nile region.
He eventually signed a peace agreement with President Yoweri Museveni’s government in 1986, paving the way for the integration of UNRF fighters into the national army.
In the decades that followed, Gen. Ali returned to mainstream politics and occupied several senior Cabinet positions, including ministerial portfolios in internal affairs, tourism and trade, while also serving multiple terms as Deputy Prime Minister.
Over nearly five decades in public life, Gen. Ali became one of Uganda’s most enduring political figures, earning recognition as a key statesman from the West Nile sub-region and a prominent participant in many of the country’s defining political and security transitions.
