The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has announced that it will deliver its order regarding provisional measures in the case filed by South Africa against Israel. The case, concerning the Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Crime of Genocide in the Gaza strip, will have the order read by Judge Joan E. Donoghue, the President of the court, at 1 p.m at the Peace Palace in The Hague.

On December 29, 2023, South Africa submitted the case, accusing Israel of alleged violations against Palestinians. The ICJ held public hearings on January 11-12, and since then, the court has been in deliberations.

The South African delegation, led by HE. Vusimuzi Madonesta and Co-agent Mr. Cornelius Scholz, faced off against the Israeli delegation, led by Mr. Gilad Noam, Mr. Tal Becker, and Co-agent Ms. Tamar Kaplan.

South Africa’s request urges the court to indicate provisional measures to prevent further harm to the rights of the Palestinian people under the Genocide convention. The public sitting to announce the order will address this pressing matter.

The Israel-Palestine conflict, ignited on October 7, 2023, following an attack by Hamas fighters in Israel, has resulted in significant loss of lives and the detention of hostages.

Israel’s subsequent actions in Gaza have claimed thousands of Palestinian lives, leading to international protests against the invasion in cities like London, New York, Istanbul, and Lisbon.
