The Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, has appointed nine senior police officers to command security zones, overseeing security operations and election-related matters during the anticipated violent NRM primaries and the 2026 General Election.
The appointments follow the violent NRM primaries in districts including Lwemiyaga-Ssembabule, where one person was shot dead by suspected military personnel during the campaign launch of the incumbent MP Ssekikubo Theodre.
Further violence was reported in Kasambya-Mubende and Isingiro districts, prompting IGP Abas Byakagaba to visit the highly contested areas to strategise and enhance security measures for the elections.
Following the security tours, Byakagaba has appointed Moses Kafeero, who will lead the Busoga region from Jinja, covering Busoga North, Busoga East, Kiira, and Sezibwa policing regions, while Stephen Tanui will take charge of the Northern zone, headquartered in Gulu. Tanui will oversee the Aswa West, Aswa East, West Nile, and North West Nile regions.
Commissioner of Police-CP Lawoti Patrick, has been assigned to the Karamoja Zone in Moroto. He will oversee security in Mt. Moroto, Kidepo, Elgon, Sipi, Bukeddi South and Bukedi North, in Soroti while Commissioner of Police Paul Nkole will command the Kyoga Zone, covering North, East, and South, East and South Kyoga.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Maate Godfrey Bolingo will command the Central Zone, based in Masaka City, covering Masaka East, Wamala, and Katonga policing regions.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Moses Muluya will command the Albertine Zone from Hoima, overseeing Albertine South, Albertine North, and the Savannah region. Meanwhile, CP Richard Ecega will command the Kampala Metropolitan policing region, covering Kampala Metropolitan East, North, and South.
Commissioner of Police (CP) Hillary Kulaigye will command the South Western region, covering Rwizi, Kigezi, and Greater Bushenyi. Meanwhile, Denis Namuhoza will oversee the Rwenzori Zone from Fort Portal, responsible for Rwenzori East and West.
