Residents of Ngarama Sub County, in Isingiro district, are appealing to the government for support after a heavy rainstorm destroyed over 10 acres of banana plantations, maize, beans, and cassava gardens.

The hailstorm also destroyed houses in five villages of Ishozi, Ngando, Biharwe, Mitooma, Kyakabindi, Karerema, and Kyamburara in Ngarama sub-county, leaving residents out in the cold.

Alex Sajja the Kabaare Parish Chairperson said that despite submitting reports about the effects of the drought and hailstorm to the office of the LCV Chairperson, residents are yet to receive any response from the government or district.

Geoffrey Aine, a resident of Ngando, lost three acres of banana plantation to the hailstorm, while his neighbor, who is a cattle farmer, lost cattle during the drought.

He said that since the disasters hit the area, prices of food commodities have increased, with a kilogram of beans now at 4,000 Shillings, up from 2,500 Shillings. Bananas, which were previously a source of food, are now considered income-generating, with a bunch now going for 30000 shillings, up from 10,000 shillings.

The District Chairperson, Alone Turahi, disclosed that the district had submitted reports and requests for relief to the Ministry of Disaster but is yet to receive any response. He urged residents to remain calm.

Turahi says the victims are in urgent need of relief support.
