Uganda’s long-distance star Joshua Cheptegei is set to compete in the Burj2Burj Half Marathon on February 8, 2026, in Dubai, as part of his preparations for future full marathon races. The Olympic and world champion is currently undergoing intensive high-altitude training in Kapchorwa, eastern Uganda, aimed at sharpening his fitness ahead of the race. This year’s edition is expected to attract a strong international field, setting the stage for a highly competitive contest.
Cheptegei is expected to face stiff competition from elite runners, including Tanzania’s world marathon champion Alphonce Simbu and Kenya’s Nicholas Kipkorir. Kipkorir finished fourth in the 5,000 metres at last year’s Shanghai Diamond League and has previously won the Copenhagen Half Marathon and the Al Sharqiyah Half Marathon. Simbu made history by winning Tanzania’s first World Championships gold medal in Tokyo in 2025.Speaking to Uganda Radio Network, Cheptegei said his participation in more half marathons is part of a deliberate long-term strategy as he transitions to longer road races. “I am running more half marathons to build my endurance. This will help me perform better and run full marathons more successfully,” Cheptegei said. His coach, Benjamin Njia, said the athlete remains focused and confident during preparations.
“Joshua is keeping positive, training well, and responding very well to the programme. He is ready to run a personal best,” Njia noted. The Burj2Burj Half Marathon will provide a major test for Cheptegei as he continues his transition from track dominance to road racing success.?
