Radio one and Akaboozi FM senior political reporter and talkshow host, Jude Bukenya, is being held at Kampala Central Police Station (CPS) following his arrest on Monday.
According to Sam Ibanda Mugabi, the President of Uganda Parliamentary Press Association (UPPA), Bukenya was arrested by Parliament Police and whisked to CPS in Kampala where he is being detained.
“The leadership of UPPA is following up the matter, and we hope to have him released sooner,” Mugabi said on Monday.
He is reportedly accused of spreading malicious information, although details regarding the same are scanty.
“He was arrested this evening at Parliament. I’m told he was spreading some fake information about one top person in government,” said on of his colleague journalists at Parliament.
No official statement has been made by police regarding the same. Our efforts to reach police spokespersons for a comment were futile.
Dozens of journalists have previously faced the wrath of Police as many have been brutally assaulted while others have been held on trumped-up charges.
Last year, 9 journalists from the Alternative Digitalk, an online television network, were arrested during the police’s raid at their premises in Makindye, Kampala, on allegations offensive communication, although some were released without charge.
