Uganda Cranes captain Emmanuel Okwi has been recalled to the national team ahead of a 4-Nations Mini tournament to take place in Uzbekistan between March 25-29th, 2022.

The tournament to take place at the Markaziy Stadium in Namangan city will also feature Tajikistan, Kyrgz Republic and hosts Uzbekistan.

Head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredojevic has today announced a squad that includes Rwanda based striker Okwi and Farouk Miya.

Okwi returns to the team after almost five months. He was excluded from the last FIFA World Cup qualifying match last October because he was finalising a move to Rwanda Premier League side, Kiyovu SC. He returns to the national team after his good form with the Rwandan side.

Ukraine based player Miya has also been recalled together with players from the Star Times Uganda Premier League.

The head says he expects to use the upcoming tournament to shape his sqaud for the 2023 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

“The upcoming mini-tournament in Uzbekistan will help us to conduct the main general check-up before the AFCON 2023 qualifiers in June 2022 (1st – 14th June). We have been in transition where several players have retired including captain Dennis Onyango, Hassan Wasswa, Mike Azira, Murushid Juuko and others. We have an important duty to make ourselves ready,” says Sredojevic.

FUFA in a statement said, the final team to Uzbekistan will be named after the regional build up games.
