Sarah Mateke, the Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs has asked youth to prioritize innovations in the agricultural sector.

Mateke made the appeal on Saturday during the closing ceremony of the two-day Youth and Innovation Expo 2023, held under the theme “Fostering Innovation for Uganda’s Transformational Development” at Makerere University.

Over 300 young individuals gathered at Professor Yusuf Lule CTF2 to showcase their various innovations.  The expo featured a display of innovations, and exhibitions highlighting innovations-turned-enterprises from the Youth for Business program across all ten colleges of the University and other University institutions. 

Mateke said that being the backbone of Uganda’s economy, agriculture accounts for 70% of employment thereby being considered a leading sector for future economic growth.

She added that the youth should make Agriculture more attractive by introducing more innovations.

Dr. Emmanuel Dei-Tumi, President and Chief Copywriter at Human Capital International Africa advised the youth innovators to not only showcase their innovations in Uganda but in other parts of the world.

Lorna Magara, the Chairperson of the Makerere University council encouraged innovators to seek ways to add more value to their innovations.

Moses Kidega, the labor Secretary at the National Youth Council urged youth and exhibitors to strive to turn their innovations into successful businesses that can transform their lives.
