President Yoweri Museveni has endorsed Kenya’s former Prime Minister, Raila Odinga for the Chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC).

This was revealed Monday by Odinga after his meeting with Presidents Yoweri Museveni and William Ruto at the Ugandan leader’s country home in Kisozi.

“I am very grateful to President Museveni for strongly endorsing my candidacy and to President Ruto for fully backing it,” Odinga wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

The two leaders from Kenya were in Uganda on the invitation of President Museveni to discuss the deepening of regional integration within the East African Community (EAC) given that the bloc is navigating economic tensions between Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, and between Rwanda and Burundi, as well as the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Odinga is emerging as a proactive leader and key in fostering diplomatic bridges and mending relationships between member states.

Odinga’s assertion of being endorsed by Museveni for the position was confirmed by President Ruto who revealed that he had also discussed the issue of Raila Odinga’s candidacy at the African Union (AU), calling for the support from President Yoweri Museveni.

President Ruto also announced that the issues affecting the flow of petroleum products between Kenya and Uganda are being resolved. “We have agreed on a way forward of sourcing and scheduling imports for the region in a manner that will ensure we achieve the most competitive pricing and maximum logistical efficiency.”
