NRM presidential candidate Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has pledged to tackle the pressing health and clean water challenges facing Amuria District. Speaking during a campaign rally, Museveni acknowledged the gaps in health services and access to clean water, despite the district’s overall peace and stability. He noted that of the eighteen sub-counties in Amuria, seven lack any health facilities, while only one government hospital serves the entire district, falling short of the policy that mandates a Health Center III in every sub-county.
To address these gaps, Museveni outlined plans to upgrade several health centers, including Oluwa, Abia, and Amolo Health Center IIs to IIIs. He also announced the construction of new Health Center IIIs in Ogongora, Asamuk, Wera, and Orungo sub-counties, as well as upgrading the Were Health Center III to a Health Center IV.
On clean water, Museveni highlighted that out of 528 villages in Amuria, only 401 have access to safe water, leaving 127 villages underserved. He cited existing piped water systems in Amuria Town Council and the Were area, benefiting about 4,000 residents, and mentioned government efforts to drill 13 deep boreholes and develop a new piped water system.
valley tank in Ocakai village, supplying over 30 million liters of water, also supports the Amare Irrigation Scheme, boosting local economic infrastructure. Museveni urged the people of Teso to focus on both immediate needs and long-term wealth creation, emphasizing that development should go hand-in-hand with action.
In a campaign moment, David Calvin Echodu, NRM Vice Chairperson for Eastern Uganda, reminded Museveni of the Arrow Boys, the local militia that helped restore peace in Teso. Echodu called for recognition and support for their contributions. Museveni assured that their plight would be addressed, acknowledging their role in securing the region’s current peace.
