Mountains of the Moon University (MMU) has inaugurated the 20th Guild leadership at the Main Campus in Lake Saaka, in Fort Portal Tourism City.
The ceremony, which was the first to be conducted entirely online, drew university officials, student leaders, and the university community to celebrate responsible and student-centered governance.
Representing the Vice Chancellor, Associate Professor John M. Kasenene, Deputy Vice Chancellor in Charge of Students Affairs, called on the new leaders to serve with integrity, work within the university’s laws, and uphold the virtues of good leadership.
He emphasized that leaders are servants of the students and must prioritize their welfare. Associate. Prof. Edmond Kagambe, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, challenged the leadership to focus on student-centered projects, pursue academic excellence, and practice accountable leadership. He assured the new leaders of upcoming induction sessions to prepare them for their roles.
The Dean of Students, Roseline Ssali, praised the successful implementation of the university’s first online voting process, describing it as a major achievement. She affirmed that all candidates were winners, with the victory margin being a matter of votes. Justice (retired) Akiiki Kiiza Dan urged the leadership to follow proper protocols in addressing student issues and seek guidance when necessary.
He also reminded the student leaders to operate within the established laws and regulations. Meanwhile, Guild President Perepetwa Kato Mungiátiibwa Patrick highlighted that leadership is a solemn duty of service, pledging a student-centered agenda grounded in loyalty and respect for the university’s rules. In an historic first, the election saw Perepetwa secure 1,027 votes, defeating his rival, Mr. Murungi Michael, who received 731 votes.
Enock Kagoro, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, said the online voting process demonstrated the university’s commitment to innovation and efficiency, reinforcing its reputation as a forward-looking institution committed to empowering student leadership through modern technology.
