The Deputy Director of Public Prosecution- International Affairs, James Odumbi Owere has cautioned state attorneys against habits of laziness and irresponsiveness, which frustrates the effectiveness of the directorate and the delivery of justice.

Speaking at the opening of a week-long induction of new state attorneys at Hotel Brovad in Masaka City on Monday, Odumbi expressed concern that some prosecutors are falling short of expectations of their duties due to peculiar conducts that manifest in their methods of work.

According to him, some state attorneys are deliberately not applying their competence while handling case files allocated to them, hence abusing public trust and slowing down the administration of criminal justice.

Odumbi has challenged the new state attorneys to measure up to the tasks of their professional deployments, by striving to exhibit exceptional levels of integrity through providing reasoned legal opinions, rather than making unnecessary referrals to the office of the DPP.

In September this year, the government recruited at least 100 state prosecutors to respond to the longstanding staffing gap in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution – ODPP.

Odumbi that while they are looking forward to the new attorneys to bolster the delivery of justice, they are equally expected to build unique personal traits that will enable them to withstand the immense temptations and challenges awaiting them in their line duties.

Savia Mugwaya, the Commissioner at Civil Service College, one of the main facilitators at the capacity building engagement called upon the new state attorneys to diligently accomplish their responsibilities and be mindful of the legacy they leave in their trail of service.

She challenged them to keep their offices open to the public and to ensure that their academic exposure and competence impacts the rights and justice of the citizens.  URN
