The Isingiro District Security Committee has passed a resolution to deny bail to all Cattle theft suspects.
The decision was made during a closed-door meeting, chaired by the Isingiro Resident District Commissioner Adda Nasiima on Friday. The meeting was attended by District Leaders, the office of the Resident District Commissioner and the District Police Commander.
District Chairperson Alone Turahi later told Journalists that the decision is arising out of the increasing cases of cattle theft in the district. He said the district had registered more than five cases of Mob Justice against suspects who had been granted bail by the courts.
He said that they will present the two resolutions to the district Coordination Committee that is chaired by the Isingiro District Chief Magistrate for further discussion and how to be implemented.
Adda Nasiima, the chairperson of the District Security Committee said that a solution was needed to fight cattle thefts which were on the increase in the district with porous routes through the borderline.
Isingiro District Police Commander Francis Liga said that while his responsibility is to fight crime in the district, he also has a duty to protect human rights noting that any solution brought to curb cattle theft was welcome. He asked judicial officers to expeditiously settle cases to avoid recurring cases.
During the Court Open day held in Isingiro last week, the Principal Judge Dr Flavian Zeija asked Judicial officers to exercise their powers in fighting crime but also protect human rights. He said, “When an offence becomes rampant the sentencing must also change.
