The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has attributed its strong performance in the recently concluded LC I elections across the Bukedi sub-region to sustained grassroots mobilisation, internal unity and what party officials describe as growing public confidence in the ruling party’s manifesto.
According to figures released by the NRM secretariat, the party secured victories in 1,936 of the 2,506 villages where elections have so far been fully conducted across the six districts of Butebo, Butaleja, Pallisa, Budaka, Busia and Kibuku. Independent candidates won most of the remaining villages, while the National Unity Platform (NUP) registered only a few victories.
Bukedi NRM mobiliser Kopolyano Wandera said the outcome demonstrates that the party’s mobilisation strategy resonated with voters throughout the region.He said residents embraced the messages delivered by party leaders during the campaigns, adding that President Yoweri Museveni’s address at the launch of the mobilisation drive inspired supporters and strengthened the party’s appeal.
In Busia District, NRM registrar Rose Wejuli said the party was optimistic about its performance from the onset of the elections after 108 NRM candidates were declared unopposed. She acknowledged that the electoral process experienced some challenges but said party leaders prioritised reconciliation with rival candidates, which helped maintain unity and contributed to the party’s success.
Wejuli added that voters rewarded the NRM for implementing its manifesto and delivering on its commitments. The victory has also been welcomed by newly elected village leaders, who say it reflects coordinated mobilisation at the grassroots.Hussein Noor, the NRM flag bearer elected LC I chairperson for Marachi C Village, credited his victory to teamwork among party leaders and supporters during the campaigns.
He pledged to improve service delivery in the village to strengthen public confidence in the ruling party. Similarly, Patrick Sanya, the newly elected LC I chairperson for Madibira B Village, said his decisive victory over his NUP opponent, polling 212 votes against 12, reflected the trust residents have in the NRM leadership. He promised to work for all residents and ensure effective service delivery.
Busia Resident District Commissioner Hajira Namagogwe said the election outcomes underscored the ruling party’s continued popularity in the district. She said the district security committee worked closely with election officials to ensure a peaceful electoral process and urged the newly elected leaders to focus on fulfilling their responsibilities to the electorate.
