The National Resistance Movement (NRM) political party has lost six of its positions won in the 2021 elections in the West Nile region in the just-concluded general elections. Out of 39 parliamentary seats in the sub-region, NRM claimed 30 seats, compared to the 36 they won in 2021.
Meanwhile, Independent candidates have gained ground, increasing from one seat in 2021 to six seats in the 2026 elections. The FDC maintained its two slots, while other opposition political parties won none. In Obongi district, NRM lost both seats it won in 2021.
FDC’s Hassan Kaps Fungaroo won with 8,503 votes against Dr. George Didi Bokha, who got 7,607 votes. Independent Harriet Joyo defeated NRM’s Zumura Maneno with 9,403 votes to 6,790.
In Pakwach district, NRM’s Jane Avur Pacuto retained the Woman MP seat with 27,310 votes, while Jonam County was taken by Independent Marshal Alenyo.
In Nebbi Municipality, Hashim Sulaiman of NRM lost the seat to Independent Emmanuel Ongiertho. In Padyere County, Ismail Otimgiw of NRM won with 32,073 votes, while the Woman MP seat for Nebbi was taken unopposed by Phionah Nyamutoro.
In Zombo district, Grace Freedom Kwiwocwiny, the NRM flag-bearer, won Oraa County from incumbent Lawrence Songa, who ran as an Independent.
Gabriel Okumu of NRM won Okoro, while the Woman MP seat was captured by Independent Teopista Achamfua, who defeated NRM’s Parliamentary Commissioner Esther Afoyochan with over 25,000 votes to 22,033.
In Arua district, NRM flag-bearers Lenia Charity and Lillian Paparu won their seats, while FDC’s Muzaidi Khemis took Central Division City from NRM incumbent Jackson Atima Lee with 6,966 votes to 5,578. NRM newcomers Phiona Onzima (Ayivu West) and Tiyo Taylor Oda (Ayivu East) also secured seats.
In Maracha County, NRM’s Nelson Uhuru, a new entrant, won with 13,696 votes against FDC’s Lee Oguzu, who received 3,990 votes. Jennifer Driwaru, the incumbent for Maracha Woman MP, retained her seat on the NRM ticket. In Maracha East, Dr. Tom Aliti of NRM won with 12,648 votes.
In Terego district, all three NRM flag-bearers—Wilfred Babanga (Terego East), Rose Obiga (Woman MP), and Eric Dramviku—emerged victorious. In Madi Okollo district, NRM secured a clean sweep, winning all three parliamentary seats: Upper, Lower, and Woman MP.
In Yumbe district, which previously had 100-percent NRM winners, Independent Karim Musa, also known as Komoro, won the Aringa North Constituency parliamentary seat with 12,369 votes, defeating NRM’s Godfrey Onzima, who got 9,766 votes. This reduced NRM’s winners in Yumbe to four.
In Koboko district, Dr. Ate Sherifa, the incumbent NRM Woman MP who ran as an Independent after losing the primary elections to Sauda Ropani, emerged victorious with 25,928 votes. Dr. Charles Ayume of NRM won Koboko Municipality with 9,839 votes.
In Moyo district, NRM maintained its two parliamentary positions. In Adjumani district, NRM retained two seats: Gen. Moses Ali with 12,845 votes and Jesica Ababiku with 35,070 votes.
However, the party lost one seat to Independent James Mamawii, who obtained 18,149 votes, defeating NRM’s Mark Dulu, who received 14,682 votes.
