Police have arrested Kassanda South Member of Parliament, Kabuye Frank on allegations of murder of Batungura Bewotti during Makerere University guild campaigns on Thursday.

The incident took at around 7pm during the last guild Presidential open campaigns at rugby grounds Makerere University.

It is alleged that during the campaigns, a scuffle ensued between supporters of FDC candidate Justus Tukamushaba and those of that of the National Unity Platform (NUP) that resulted in the stabbing of the deceased by students who were allegedly led by MP Kabuye Frank among others.

Bewotti 27, a student of law at Uganda Christian University Kampala Campus and resident of Kikoni Zone B, Makerere 3 Parish Kawempe Division in Kampala was at Makerere to solicit votes for his friend the FDC candidate.

According to ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, the youthful lawmaker was arrested along with two other people who are now detained at different police stations in Kampala.

“The Police were informed and upon reaching the scene we found blood stains believed to be for the deceased inside Nsibirwa Hall where he hid there after the scuffle that led to his stabbing,” says Owoyesigyire.

“We have arrested three people whom we believe were part of the chaos. These are; Hon. Kabuye Frank who is detained at CPS Kampala, Ssekidde Allan currently detained at Wandegeya police station and Kabuurwa Muzafaru who is detained at old Kampala police station,” Owoyesigyire adds.

Police say their hunt is on for other suspects who could have been involved in the deadly incident.

The body of the deceased was conveyed to City Mortuary Mulago for Postmortem from Makerere hospital where he succumbed to the wound.

“We have cordoned off the area, statements are still being recorded and CCTV footages will be retrieved to aid in the ongoing investigations,” Owoyesigyire adds.

Meanwhile, following yesterday’s deadly incident, the University Council has suspended the guild elections tomorrow as well as the entire guild leadership until further notice.

“The ongoing elections for the 88th Makerere University Students Guild leadership are suspended indefinitely,” reads a letter by the Chairperson of the Council in part.

“The Makerere University Students Guild is suspended with immediate effect. This suspension includes the Guild Care Taker Government and the Students Common Room”

“Management shall investigate all cases of violence in the electoral campaigns for the 88th Students Guild leadership and report to the Council for appropriate action,” adds the letter.

She also revealed that the Council will convene in an emergency meeting on Friday 15th July 2022 to consider further actions to address student indiscipline and violence at the University.
