Opposition members of Parliament have chosen JEEMA President and Bugiri Municipality MP Asuman Basalirwa as their candidate to contest for the position of Speaker of Parliament to replace the deceased Jacob Oulanyah.

Convening in Kampala on Thursday, 49 opposition legislators voted for Basalirwa beating Erute South County MP Odur Jonathan who only garnered 20 votes.

MPs Ssemujju Nganda, Shamim Malende and detained Allan Ssewanyana did not offered themselves for selection as earlier promised.

Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Caucus of the ruling political party NRM unanimously endorsed Bukedea woman MP Annet Anita Among as the party’s flagbear for the position of Speaker.

Among from the NRM will now face Basalirwa from the opposition tomorrow as Parliament votes for the position. It is not clear whether some other members of Parliament will stand as independents.

The ruling NRM party has majority MPs in the Eleventh Parliament totaling 336 while the Opposition has 109 MPs.

Article 82 (4) of the Constitution provides that no business shall be transacted in Parliament other than an election of Speaker at any time that office is vacant.
