Pokwero sub-county, nestled in Pakwach District, is abuzz with tales of triumph thanks to the Parish Development Model (PDM) program.

The community’s wholehearted embrace of the initiative has yielded remarkable results, a fact underscored during a gathering in Pokwero sub-county on Thursday.

The meeting, presided over by Mr. Owiny Alfred Thopacu, the Special Presidential Assistant on Political Affairs and also overseeing PDM program monitoring in Northern Uganda, brought together over 600 beneficiaries from six parishes: Pokwero East, Janam-Orwenyo, Owiny, Oceke, Pokwero, and Lobodegi.

Mr. Owiny, championing the vision initiated by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to uplift rural households into the money economy, urged the attendees to safeguard the PDM program zealously.

“The President’s ambition is to empower every rural household to banish poverty through PDM,” he emphasized. Stressing prudent enterprise selection, he encouraged participants to opt for ventures promising high returns.

In a gesture of support, Mr. Owiny pledged to distribute cassava cuttings from his 5-acre cassava farm to farmers once the rains stabilize. Furthermore, he advocated for the establishment of PDM SACCOs (Savings and Credit Cooperative Organizations), ensuring continual government injections to boost their financial standing, with each parish bank set to receive 500 million shillings after five years.

Mr. Robert Omito, the LCV Chairman of Pakwach District, urged PDM beneficiaries to actively participate in such meetings to address challenges and draw inspiration from success stories. Meanwhile, Mr. Twaibu Achile, the Pakwach Deputy Resident District Commissioner, sternly warned against detractors spreading misinformation about the President’s development initiatives, including PDM.

Ms. Hawa Sebbi, the Acting sub-county Chief of Pokwero, provided a comprehensive overview of PDM progress in her jurisdiction, advocating for timely disbursement of funds to prevent disruptions to farming activities.

Among the beneficiaries, Ms. Florence Oikane from Lobodegi parish utilized the funds to kickstart a successful piggery farm, while Mr. Coorom Patrick from Pokwero parish invested in his 1.25-acre cassava plantation, and Mr. Jayik Felix ventured into fishing, all thanks to PDM funds.

The gathering also attracted senior government and security officials, signaling the widespread importance and support for the PDM program in Pakwach District.
