A furry of excitement and optimism engulfed residents of Makayi village, Semuto Subcounty in Nakaseke district on Saturday morning as they witnessed the commencement of drilling of a borehole in their area by the district woman Member of Parliament, Sarah Najjuma.
At the drilling point, residents reined in excitement and curiosity as the borehole drilling equipment was operated.
Speaking to Plus News on Saturday, Najjuma said clean water is not negotiable, but a necessity that every home must enjoy.
“Residents in many villages here either fetch water from ungazetted places most which are polluted, or have to part with huge sums of money on a daily to buy clean water,” says Najjuma.
“I can’t afford looking on as our people are suffering,” she added, before revealing that drilling is ongoing in Makayi, Nakatete, Kijebejo and Kitekanya villages.
The lawmaker noted that since siting was completed at Nabisojo, Kinyogoga, Kivumu and Blessed S.S, drilling will commence soonest.
She said these boreholes and more to be sunk, will go a long way in improving the community’s access to clean water and also help in reducing outbreak of waterborne diseases.
Last week, Najjuma announced that she was to kick-start siting and drilling new boreholes in Nakaseke, one of the districts of Greater Luweero area, with an intention of helping communities with clean water that is safe for household cooking, washing and sanitation.
She revealed that this phase will see eight (8) boreholes sited and drilled in Makayi, Kijebejo, Kitekanya, Blessed SS, Nabisojo, Kinyogoga and Kivumu.
Indeed, days after her announcement, her team led by her Political Assistant, Wasswa Tadeo Ziritwawula embarked on the process.
They sited a drilling point in Kinyogoga before heading to Kivumu in Kito Subcounty and later to Nabisojo area.
At Nabisojo, Wasswa said a Jerrycan of clean water goes for Shs1000, justifying the need for an immediate intervention of the area Woman MP to help the communities.
Najjuma’s PA Wasswa, noted that at Blessed Secondary School, the Head teacher currently spends Shs2.5 million a term on buying clean water for students.
One of the residents of Makayi village only identified as Moses, expressed pleasure towards MP Najjuma for was he called “bringing joy” to their area.
“I am giving thanks to our MP Najjuma for drilling this Borehole. We are facing water challenges but with her intervention, we are hopeful that that will be a thing of the past,” Moses said.
“Hon Najjuma has brought joy to the community,” he said before asking that the MP avails more boreholes to the area in future.
