Police in Busoga North have busted a criminal gang suspected of orchestrating aggravated robberies across the sub-region. According to Busoga North Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha, their intelligence team had been tracking the suspects for three months following a surge in robbery incidents in Kamuli, Kaliro, and Luuka districts.
Kasadha revealed that intelligence reports linked the gang to Fred Wambi, a resident of Bukolobe village in Kamuli Municipality. Residents had informed the police that Wambi was in illegal possession of firearms. “On March 20, 2025, Wambi was seen transporting suspected guns to an unknown location. However, due to continuous tracking, intelligence-led us to Bugweri District, where it was discovered that he had hidden the weapons at his brother’s home,” Kasadha stated.
Police later raided the home of Wambi’s brother, Grace Mugaya, alias Jordan Lwambaga, where they recovered two AK-47 rifles, two magazines, and an unspecified number of live rounds of ammunition. Upon their arrest, Wambi and Mugaya led police to six other accomplices: Susan Kwagala, Godfrey Mukasa, Henry Wamubiligwe, Stephen Basalirwa, Godfrey Ayazika, Aziz Namugona, and Sosipater Boyi.
A detective privy to the investigation disclosed that Kwagala played a key role in identifying wealthy individuals, whose details she would relay to Wambi, enabling him to rob them at gunpoint. The gang also staged illegal roadblocks, ambushing unsuspecting victims and robbing them.
“This strategy allowed them to operate undetected by both security agencies and the local community,” the detective said. During the operation, police recovered suspected stolen property, including a Land Cruiser (registration number UAZ 656B), a Toyota Hiace taxi (registration number UDR 580P), several number plates, two television sets, and four new mattresses.
Kasadha commended community members for sharing intelligence that played a crucial role in the gang’s arrest. He added that investigations are ongoing, and police are working with other security agencies to apprehend additional suspects still at large.
