Police in Arua City have launched a pursuit for a driver who fled the scene after a fatal road crash that left one person dead and another seriously injured.

The accident, involving a Fuso Mitsubishi truck (UAY 366U) and a Bajaj motorcycle (UFC 098T), occurred on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, at around 4:30 pm along School Road in Arua Public Cell, Bursar Ward, Central Division.

The deceased has been identified as Alex Amayo, a passenger on the motorcycle, who died on the spot after sustaining severe head injuries.

The motorcycle rider, who was critically injured, is currently battling for his life at Arua Regional Referral Hospital, where he was rushed for medical attention.

Josephine Angucia, the West Nile regional police spokesperson, confirmed the incident, noting that the ill-fated truck, which had been parked by the roadside as the driver loaded goods into a nearby kiosk, suddenly rolled backwards and rammed into an oncoming motorcycle that was reportedly moving at high speed.

According to Angucia, the driver of the truck, whose identity is not yet known, abandoned the vehicle at the scene and fled immediately after the crash.

Preliminary police investigations attribute the cause of the accident to the use of a motor vehicle in a dangerous mechanical condition.

Amaku Swadik, the chairperson of the Arua City Boda Boda Association, has cautioned riders against over speeding and reckless riding, describing it as a leading cause of fatal road accidents.

“Over speeding and recklessness are the major causes of these fatal accidents. I urge all boda boda riders to exercise caution,” Swadik said.

A recent report by the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety indicates that at least 36 people have lost their lives in a series of road crashes recorded across Uganda over the past two months.

The report further notes that the majority of these incidents involve motor vehicles and often result in both fatalities and serious injuries, with passengers emerging as the most affected victims. URN
