Police in Kakumiro District are holding an unspecified number of their own in connection with the suspected murder of the district youth chairperson, Ronald Kitone.
According to Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine South Regional Police spokesperson, the incident occurred on June 1, 2026.Police allege that Kitone had planned to kill his father, who reported the matter to authorities, prompting officers to move in and arrest him. Hakiza said that during the arrest, officers reportedly deployed a tear gas canister into the room where Kitone was being held.
Members of the public in Kikwaya claim that the tear gas exposure led to his death.He explained that the officers involved have since been detained pending the outcome of a postmortem examination, which will determine whether Kitone died from tear gas exposure or suspected poisoning.
“Following public concerns and accusations that police were responsible for Kitone’s death, the officers were transferred to Hoima Central Police Station, where they are currently being held as investigations continue,” Hakiza said.
