Hon. Peter Lokeris, the Minister for Karamoja Affairs, commended President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his efforts in addressing youth unemployment, particularly through initiatives like the Presidential Industrial Zonal Hubs project, which has established 19 hubs nationwide.
Speaking as the Chief Guest during the graduation ceremony of 423 students at the Napak Presidential Industrial Skilling hub, Hon. Lokeris emphasized the significance of these programs in uplifting communities, especially in regions like Karamoja.
The graduates, representing diverse backgrounds from nine districts in the Karamoja region, were awarded certificates in seven vocational disciplines, including Tailoring and Design, Hairdressing, Building and Construction Practice, Carpentry & Joinery, Welding, Bakery & Confectionery, and Leather Processing.
Highlighting the President’s vision to empower Ugandan youth and alleviate poverty, Hon. Lokeris emphasized the importance of vocational training in providing tangible skills and improving livelihoods.
He also underscored the impact of the skilling program in bridging the gap between education and employment, citing success stories of skilled workers now contributing to various sectors, including construction.
In her remarks, Ms. Jane Barekye, the State House Comptroller, applauded the graduates for their achievement and emphasized the value of their certificates, equating them to higher education qualifications.
Furthermore, she outlined plans for the establishment of common user facilities in Karamoja districts to support graduates in starting their businesses, with a call for NGOs to prioritize employing skilled youth in the region.
Mr. John Paul Kodet, the Napak District LCV Chairperson, highlighted the transformation in enrollment following improved security measures, thanking the UPDF for their role in fostering peace and enabling uninterrupted skill acquisition.
Maj. Gen. Don Nabasa, the UPDF 3rd Division Commander, credited President Museveni’s leadership for the program’s success, noting the positive impact on youth previously at risk of joining armed groups.
The ceremony also featured testimonials from graduates, illustrating how their newfound skills have translated into employment opportunities and improved livelihoods.
Overall, the event underscored the government’s commitment to equipping youth with practical skills to drive economic growth and reduce unemployment across the country.
