President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni inaugurated the National Patriotism Environmental Protection campaign on Friday at Kitebi Secondary School in Rubaga Division, Kampala.
In his address, President Museveni expressed his satisfaction with the campaign’s focus on environmental conservation. He emphasized, “Those who encroach upon wetlands, lakeshores, or riverbanks are detrimental to our nation’s well-being.”
Acknowledging historical factors influencing land use, he remarked, “While some communities were misled by colonial powers, there’s no justification for encroaching on wetlands today. Compensation will be provided for those affected, as we prioritize the preservation of our natural resources.”
President Museveni underscored the importance of patriotism in driving national prosperity, citing principles of the NRM party. He emphasized the need for both internal and regional markets, as well as socio-economic transformation through education and productive work.
Furthermore, he called for government schools to cease charging fees, emphasizing the importance of accessible education. He commended Kitebi Secondary School for its modest fees and effective teaching methods, urging other institutions to follow suit, particularly those in rural areas.
Addressing students directly, President Museveni advised against premature life choices that could hinder their future prospects, urging them to focus on education and personal development.
First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Maama Janet Museveni, lauded Kitebi Secondary School for exemplifying patriotism and implementing government initiatives effectively. She emphasized the campaign’s additional goal of combatting global warming.
Minister for Presidency, Hon. Babirye Milly Babalanda, assured the President of the government’s support for the Patriotism Secretariat’s efforts, particularly in environmental conservation. She also thanked him for appointing additional staff to facilitate the implementation of patriotism activities.
Commissioner for Patriotism, Ms. Hellen Seku, outlined the campaign’s objectives and assured its nationwide rollout. She emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship and urged citizens to participate actively in tree planting and waste management.
Ms. Seku also highlighted the concerning prevalence of HIV/AIDS among youth, urging vigilance and responsible behavior. She linked economic empowerment through fruit tree planting to deterring harmful habits among young people.
On the issue of corruption, Ms. Seku asserted that instilling patriotism values would curb such malpractices, fostering a sense of responsibility towards self and society.
Hajj Mohammed Kamulegeya, Head Teacher of Kitebi Secondary School, expressed gratitude to the President for choosing their school as the campaign’s launch venue. He commended the government’s leadership and various programs aimed at national development.
The event saw the attendance of key officials, including Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Hajjat Minsa Kabanda, Executive Director of Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Ms. Dorothy Kisaka, and other dignitaries.
