President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has called upon women leaders to focus on promoting wealth creation instead of engaging in political activities.
During a gathering with the leaders of the National Women’s Council and the National Resistance Movement (NRM) Women’s League at State House-Entebbe, President Museveni emphasized the importance of integrating every household into the money economy through initiatives such as the “ekibaaro” program and the adoption of the four-acre farming model.
Encouraging individuals with limited land resources to embrace the four-acre model, President Museveni outlined a strategy where each acre is utilized for specific agricultural purposes, including coffee cultivation, fruit farming, food production, and animal husbandry. He emphasized that this approach would effectively combat poverty through commercial agriculture.
President Museveni also highlighted alternative pathways to economic empowerment, such as the Emyooga program and small-scale manufacturing ventures like shoemaking and tailoring. Additionally, he urged leaders to promote engagement in the services sector, including transportation, healthcare, and education, as well as emphasizing the potential of the ICT sector to drive economic transformation.
Addressing the success of the NRM party, President Museveni attributed its popularity to its focus on addressing the needs of the people rather than identity-based politics. He encouraged NRM leaders to advocate for poverty alleviation using the party’s principles.
Regarding his potential candidacy in the upcoming elections, President Museveni assured the women leaders that their proposal would be considered within the NRM structures, with a decision to be announced in due course.
Hajjat Faridah Kibowa, Chairperson of the National Women’s Council, expressed gratitude to President Museveni for his support of women in leadership roles and conveyed the league’s endorsement of his candidacy for the presidency in 2026 and beyond.
The meeting also saw the presence of Hon. Betty Amongi, Minister of Gender, Labour, and Social Development.
