President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s philanthropic gesture was unveiled on Tuesday as he announced a substantial contribution of Shs1.3 billion to the Nebbi Catholic Diocese in preparation for the upcoming Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations.

Set to lead this year’s Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations on June 3rd, the Nebbi Catholic Diocese was tasked with orchestrating the event, necessitating a budget of Shs1.3 billion. This marks the second occasion the diocese has taken the helm, having previously led the prayers in Namugongo in 2007.

The annual commemoration pays homage to the 22 Catholic and 23 Anglican martyrs who bravely stood for their faith, enduring execution under the orders of Kabaka Mwanga of the Buganda Kingdom between 1885 and 1887.

During a meeting at State House-Entebbe, President Museveni warmly received the religious delegation led by Rt. Rev. Raphael Wokorach, the Archbishop-elect of the Gulu Archdiocese and Apostolic Bishop of Nebbi Diocese, introduced by Hon. Dr. Joyce Moriku Kaducu, the State Minister for Education and Sports in charge of Primary Education.

Expressing gratitude, Rt. Rev. Wokorach thanked President Museveni for his wise leadership, underscoring the importance of this year’s celebrations coinciding with the diamond jubilee since the canonization of the Uganda martyrs. He also highlighted the financial challenges faced and appealed for additional support, a request graciously granted by the President.

Rt. Rev. Wokorach shared his vision for the diocese, focusing on sustainable agricultural practices to uplift livelihoods in the region, emphasizing the need for modern agricultural equipment such as tractors.

President Museveni, in turn, congratulated Rt. Rev. Wokorach on his recent appointment as Archbishop of Gulu Archdiocese and assured the delegation of the government’s unwavering support for the celebrations. He also provided insights into agricultural practices, stressing the transition to intensive farming for enhanced productivity.

In addition to the financial contribution, President Museveni pledged to provide six tractors and address infrastructure challenges, including the construction of the Nebbi-Goli road, further demonstrating his commitment to the region’s development.

The meeting, attended by various organizing committee members, underscored the collective effort towards ensuring the success of the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations.
