The Rotary Club of Arua has awarded Baifa Andezu, a midwife at Arua Regional Referral Hospital as the best midwife of the Year 2026.
The award wss in recognition of her outstanding performance and dedicated service.Baifa’s recognition comes as part of the commemoration of Maternal and Child Health Awareness Month, which is observed annually to appreciate the contributions of health workers in improving maternal and child health.
Officials from the Rotary Club of Arua explained that the award is intended to appreciate and encourage exceptional service delivery by individuals who make a positive impact on the community. Jesca Ondoru, the Club President described her as a dedicated professional who has remained committed to her work and community throughout her years of service.
She noted that three staff members from the maternity department were nominated by hospital management and Baifa emerged as the winner based on her dedication, commitment and years of experience, following background checks.
Baifa began her career as a midwife in 1990, starting on probation at Yumbe Hospital before being transferred to Arua Regional Referral Hospital later that same year.
Since then, she has continuously served at the hospital, making her one of the longest serving staff members with a clean record of dedicated service to mothers in the maternity ward.
While receiving the Vocational Service Award on her behalf, the Principal Hospital Administrator, Louis Muhindo, described her as a reliable and dedicated staff member who always prioritises teamwork. He said that the award is a sign that there are people who appreciate work done by health workers, even when they are not aware of it, describing the recognition as timely and welcome.
Speaking to Uganda Radio Network (URN), Baifa Andezu attributed her success in service delivery to teamwork with fellow staff members and her commitment to serving the community beyond simply working for pay. The Rotary Vocational Service Award adds to several other recognitions Baifa has received over the course of her career.
She was previously recognised as the Best Midwife in Arua, among five other awards.With just three years remaining before her retirement, Baifa hopes to mentor more health workers and remains open to opportunities that will enable her to continue serving the community after retirement. URN
