Russia says the United States has taken into account Moscow’s position on proposed trilateral negotiations involving Russia, Ukraine and the US, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has said.
Lavrov said Washington had offered to facilitate the trilateral talks, with Moscow agreeing in principle but attaching conditions linked to the parliamentary elections in Russia.
According to Lavrov, Russia subsequently became concerned about what he described as efforts by Kyiv to disrupt the State Duma elections throughout the three-day voting period.
“We have indicated that in such circumstances we want to understand what proposals Zelensky will send his envoys with,” Lavrov said during a press conference following a meeting of the Commonwealth of Independent States Foreign Ministers.
He said the nature of the proposals expected from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s representatives was particularly important to Moscow as it considers whether and how the talks should proceed.
“This is very important to us, and the US side has taken note of our arguments,” Lavrov said.
The remarks come as diplomatic efforts continue around possible negotiations aimed at addressing the war in Ukraine, with Moscow and Kyiv maintaining significantly different positions over the terms and framework of any potential settlement.
Russia has repeatedly called for its security concerns and broader political demands to be addressed in any negotiations, while Ukraine has maintained its own conditions for meaningful peace talks.
