Apami Primary School in Ajuri County, Alebtong district has registered 479 new learners in six months following a facelift.

The school was in an appalling state with classrooms all cracked, and roofless, and a lack of toilets for both learners and teachers. Its enrollment of over 1,000 pupils had dropped to only 265.

However, months after rehabilitation, the enrollment has also significantly increased from 265 to 744 pupils, out of whom 35 are registered candidates set to sit PLE this year.

Charles Okello the head teacher says that the poor structures in the school had put the lives of students and teachers at risk. Okello says that the refurbishment will reduce absenteeism and gradually improve performance.

Okello however says that the school is still characterized by many challenges ranging from lack of accommodation for teachers, insufficient funding, and lack of electricity.

Parents are excited about the new structures saying it will attract more learners and facilitate development in the area. They cautioned the management of the school to ensure that the structures are put to good use.

Pius Victor Okabo, the Alebtong District Inspector of Schools said that there are several other schools in the district operating in dilapidated structures which continue to affect learning because the district lacks funds for renovation.

The other schools in a dilapidated state include Amon-oneno, Angopet, Adwir, and Awelokuricok where lessons are conducted under trees.
