Security has arrested three suspected machete-wielding thugs that terrorized Nsangi residents barely three weeks ago. The trio has been identified as Meddy Igga, Allan Safari, and Mansur Kwizera.

Detectives and Crime Intelligence team tracked the trio using Closed Circuit Television (CCTV), mobile phones and information provided by victims on how they looked like. The trio in police cells attacked Collins Musoke, Kenneth Ssebufu, Winnie Namutebi, Juma Kalanzi, Michael Emuroni, and Shafic Male.

The victims lost valuable items such as mobile phones which police have also used to track the suspects. After attacking Musoke, Ssebufu, Kalanzi, Emuroni, Namutebi and Emuroni, the suspects also raided the home of former Kawempe South MP Mubarak Munyagwa’s home where they hacked the security guard.

Luke Owoyesigyire the deputy police spokesperson, said Benjamin Mpaka the guard at Munyagwa’s home sustained injuries in the head and other body parts. These attacks happened at Budo ward, Kyengera town council.

“In both instances, victims sustained injuries, and valuable items, including a 65-inch television, approximately 2 million in cash, and 10 phones, were stolen. Additionally, a vehicle a Mark X UBB 043A was vandalized at one of the targeted homes,” Owoyesigyire said.

Detectives traced mobile phones with unauthorized mobile money transactions. Operations to have Igga, Safari and Kwizera arrested were launched on Tuesday until they were all apprehended yesterday by police officers drawn from Katwe and Nsangi.

“Diligent police work led to the successful arrest of the trio yesterday where the suspects were found in possession of breaking implements believed to have been used in the commission of the crimes. Telephone lines associated with the illicit transfer of money during the robbery incidents were also recovered and will serve as crucial exhibits for the prosecution of the suspects,” Owoyesigyire said.

Igga has told police that they operate within a larger group of 6-8 members, primarily targeting the areas of Budo, Kimbeja, and Kyengera town council. Kwizera and his colleagues have named their colleagues who are currently being pursued.

“Security agencies are actively pursuing other members of the group who remain at large,” Owoyesigyire added. “We commend the public for their vigilance in providing information against criminal elements and applaud the dedicated task teams for the successful arrest of the suspects.”

Investigators have placed charges of Aggravated Robbery and Attempted Murder against Igga, Safari and Kwizera. Although Munyagwa attempted to link the attack on his home to political witch-hunt, detectives have so far established the perpetrators are common  criminals who have often terrorizing areas of Nsangi, Budo and Kyengera.
